Telecommunications company NetCologne originated as a start-up in 1994, the company has developed today into a leading fiber-optic provider and digitization pioneer.

Infrastructure for tomorrow

NetCologne is committed to expanding the digital infrastructure in Cologne and the surrounding region. The company is a fiber-optic pioneer throughout Germany, and recently has been able to set two further milestones in the direction of digitization with the LoRaWAN radio network and the “ThingsNet” IoT platform. LoRaWAN (Long Range Wide Area Network) is responsible for the secure transmission of sensor data throughout the city, while ThingsNet implements a corresponding infrastructure for the "Internet of Things". This will make Cologne a model city for digital transformation.

Cologne at their heart

The company has always felt a strong commitment to its home city. Improving the quality of life in Cologne and beyond the city limits is a large driving force, with regionality as an integral part of the service providers business model, with transparent authenticity at the forefront.

The company identifies with the city of millions on the Rhine not only because of its name: NetCologne, it is also heavily involved in Cologne's cultural scene. For example, the company sponsors and supports a wide range of cultural events and institutions in the city.

Focus on schools

But let's get back to digitization: An important and pioneering factor here is, of course, how students use digital media. NetCologne is equipping Cologne's schools with a comprehensive digital infrastructure to ensure that young people come into contact with digital media at an early stage. The company is pursuing a 360-degree approach, from fiber-optic connections with nationwide WLAN coverage and equipment to central identity management and IT support. For this purpose, NetCologne IT Services has its own department with around 85 employees who look after the schools exclusively – a unique selling point in Cologne.

A network of sustainability

As a company in the Cologne municipal utility association, the issue of environmental and climate protection plays an important role. Through targeted measures, NetCologne has been able to reduce its own CO2 emissions to a minimum and will be climate-neutral by 2022. In addition, the consistent expansion of fiber optics sustainably supports the region on its way to climate neutrality.
