The use of antimicrobials in livestock farming and aquaculture production leaves antibiotic residues in the environment, causes harm to animal microbiomes, and creates a significant risk of the spread of antimicrobial resistance, which can be devastating to human health, and agricultural ecosystems.

Further, the risk of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) must be addressed because it directly reduces the availability of effective medicines to treat disease in humans.

There has been a rise of AMR in livestock farming and aquaculture due to overuse of antibiotics. Antibiotic residues act as a critical reservoir for the development of resistant bacteria, which can be transmitted to humans through the food chain, direct animal contact, and the environment, contributing to the global crisis of increasing AMR.

Proteon Pharmaceuticals’ innovative biotechnology platform is dedicated to improving animal and human health. Proteon’s leading in class research has led to the development of bacteriophage-based feed additives that enables farmers to reduce the use of antibiotics and encourages more environmentally sustainable agricultural practices. “Our products are an exciting alternative to antibiotics, as bacteriophage cocktails are very specific. Working against selected pathogenic strains, they do not contribute to the development of antibiotic resistance…they are completely natural.”

Organic prevention of Salmonella

Proteon Pharmaceuticals’ vision of sustainable livestock farming and aquaculture has become a reality with the development of their BAFASAL+G ® product. It is a natural and organic bacteriophage-based feed additive, developed to increase food safety and enhance      sustainability, that improves economic performance in poultry production using innovative science to harness a natural process.

The BAFASAL+G ® additive increases the quality of life for animals. It has an easy application through water and feed, while causing zero side effects. The additive can be introduced at various points in the poultry life-cycle, though it is recommended for use from  hatching due to the young animals susceptibility to Salmonella.

The additive is effective against a broad range of the most commonly present Salmonella serovars, preventing and eliminating the development of infection in poultry, thereby reducing the food safety risk for people.

“It is a liquid feed additive that can be added to the drinking water on the poultry farms, preventing the colonisation of Salmonella. In that way, we reduce the chance of Salmonella being passed on to the consumer.” The Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has cited about 1.35 million Salmonella infection cases and approximately 420 deaths in the United States every year.

Proteon Pharmaceuticals’ product BAFASAL+G works to reduce the risk of Salmonella transmission will help to further improve food safety and quality, thereby reducing consumer risk.

Environmentally sustainable agriculture

“Proteon’s products themselves are natural and organic. They leave no residues and are produced in ways that are carbon neutral.” Proteon Pharmaceuticals is a global leader in innovative design of environmentally sustainable products developed to improve animal and human health from their patented phage-platform technology.

Proteon Pharmaceuticals is dedicated to the reduction of antibiotics on farms as part of a sustainable agriculture, which is also netcarbon negative. Additionally, Proteon’s products support UN Sustainable Development Goals including zero hunger, good health and well-being, climate action and responsible consumption.
