Our communication networks and computing infrastructure face limitations that hinder progress in the era of AI and advanced technologies.  Significant change is needed to overcome these obstacles and shape a better future.  Our vision is to create the next generation of the Internet that is personal, functional, smart, and inspires trust while being widely embraced.  This is the motivation behind creating the Innovative Optical and Wireless Networks (IOWN) initiative.

To expedite the development of IOWN, the IOWN Global Forum has brought together over 110 leading companies, including NTT, Sony, Intel, and other partners.  Many standards will be developed through this industry collaboration and use cases will be tested to help achieve the benefits of IOWN technologies. 

IOWN introduces an approach that replaces traditional electronic connections with faster, more efficient light-based connections.  We can unlock high-speed, large-capacity, and low-latency capabilities in devices, networks, and computing infrastructure by leveraging optical technologies.  In addition, optical-based computing and networks significantly lower the power consumption required for the future Internet.

This technology has many potential benefits. In healthcare, for example, it could enable real-time bio-digital twins, facilitating faster prediction and prevention of medical conditions.  Additionally, it can support personalized drug development by applying AI and data analytics. The low latency and secure nature of IOWN bring transformative changes to healthcare delivery.

In addition, optical technologies can create a more secure, safe, and connected future. Through global optical connections, communities can be united, for instance, by establishing a virtual shared space for the metaverse. Other applications include real-time crowd monitoring, emergency services, and support for autonomous vehicles to reduce accidents and congestion. Other examples include cryptographic communication ensuring protection against cyber threats while establishing a secure digital environment.
