Today, 801 percent of all energy consumed comes from fossil fuels. This needs to change. The 2020s will be a pivotal decade in the fight against climate change. Carbon emissions need to be halved by every decade until 2050 to reach the goals of the Paris Agreement and avoid a climate crisis.

The decarbonization of the energy sector has led to a surge in renewable energy. The challenge with renewable energy is that the two main sources of renewable energy, wind and solar, are intermittent. The missing link between renewable energy and constant reliability is energy storage.

As the global community comes together to fight climate change, the telecom industry and the world at large are stepping into a new technological era with 5G. Telecom networks need a constant supply of power to function. In the event of a 5G network failure, the entire ecosystem of connected devices could collapse. Simply put, in the hyperconnected world of the 5G era, connectivity must never be lost. Therefore, mobile network operators need great power backup. And lots of it.

Based on these insights, Polarium, the Stockholm-based energy storage challenger, was born in 2015. Stefan Jansson, CEO with more than 25 years’ experience of working with batteries, founded Polarium to make a positive difference to the world. Realizing that the lithium-ion technology would be key to empower a smart and sustainable world. Today, Polarium has grown into a truly global company and has been recognized as the seventh-fastest growing company in Europe by the Financial Times. However, Polarium is just at the beginning of its journey.

Initially, the company focused exclusively on servicing the global telecom market. Providing high-end, robust, durable lithium power backup solutions. They allow companies to effectively harness renewable energy sources more effectively, reducing their reliance on fossil fuels, and saving considerable amounts of fuel. For example, Polarium collaborates closely with American Tower Corporation (ATC), one of the world largest telecom tower companies, in Sub-Saharan Africa. In a region where about half of the population lacks access to electricity, diesel fuel is the primary source of energy for powering telecom sites. Tuoyo Ebigbeyi, Chief Technical Officer for ATC in Africa, reports that by strategically partnering with Polarium, his company has managed to reduce its reliance on fossil fuels from 67% in three years to less than 27% today, thereby saving an average of seven million liters of fuel per month.

In late 2020, the company decided to take a bold new step, expanding into the rapidly growing market for sustainable energy storage solutions for the commercial and industrial sector. This enables customers in this new segment to optimize energy cost, maximize use of renewable energy, and cut carbon emissions. Polarium’s contribution to the energy sector represents an intelligent way of working that everyone can learn from. One that is not only good for business, but good for the planet too.
