Agriculture uses over 70% of the planet’s arable land, with livestock generating 14.5% of all human-generated greenhouse-gas emissions annually. The EAT-Lancet Commission on Food, Planet, and Health reports that plant-based consumption needs to double to meet rising consumer growth and demand sustainably.

IFF is a global leader in food, beverage, health, biosciences and scent,  leveraging science and creativity to create essential solutions that meet growing consumer demand. Combining a broad and diverse product portfolio, the company offers end-to-end design across food and beverage products, with a dedication to doing more good for people and the planet.

“As an example, we are in every second ice cream, every second nutrition bar and every fourth loaf of bread consumed on the planet every day.”

Plant-Based Sustainable Solutions

The world’s population is projected to increase to approximately 10 billion people by 2050; at present, the global food system cannot meet growing nutritional demands without causing irreversible damage to the environment.

Studies have shown that switching to plant-based protein could reduce annual agricultural production emissions. On top of this emission reduction, plant-based solutions also reduce the inputs of land and water significantly, compared to beef.

“1 kilo of soy protein isolate produces roughly 3 kilos of CO2e in the production. If you take 1 kilo of beef protein, CO2e emission is 178 kilos, so more than 60 times more.”

- Erik Wiberg-Lyng, President of Ingredients Platform at IFF

IFF is at the forefront of alternative protein, supporting the shift to more plant-based diets by creating options for every meal, every day. Dedicated to creating a robust portfolio of plant-based products, with the potential to appeal to every consumer. More than 75% of consumers say they pay a lot of attention to their protein intake.

“It’s important that in our design we design without limitation, without going into imitating the foods that are existing and these also bring a lot of opportunities for the consumers to have more options to integrate into their diet as well as for the industry to develop new things and to really innovate.”

- Sonia Huppert, Global Innovation Marketing Leader at IFF
